One of the things I’ve discovered through the years, is the ability of Golf to bring a team together. A shared experience for your team, being out of the work environment and out on the range, and being able to learn something new together all add up to a great team building experience.

Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting the Professional Women of Insurance group — and some of their male friends!

They scheduled a late afternoon session and I had Redford to help me work with the 25 members of their group. Large groups like this work perfectly when we have a teaching rotation and practice tees available to accommodate a large group.

Some people took the lessons very seriously, others just came to have fun and spend time with each other.

We took the group through individualized practice swings and gave them instant swing analysis. The group also took time on the PlaneSwing to reinforce the swing analysis. Each member were also sent a copy of their swing analysis by email.

Next time you need a fun original idea for a team building exercise, consider golf!

One of the best Junior Golf Tournaments in the world is being held on various courses throughout the county. In 1968, The Junior World was first introduced by San Diego Junior Golf Association as a means for young players throughout the world to come together to play golf and share in a cultural exchange. This prestigious tournament has a rich history. Check out a list of past winners here.
The following is taken from the 1968 Junior World Program:
- The idea behind the Junior World Golf Championships is simply “YOUTH.” The San Diego County Junior Golf Association is founded on the principle of serving young people, in the hope that by doing so today’s youth will have a better chance of creating the world we all want. The Junior World tournament is an international extension of that principle. We believe that by bringing together young people from all parts of the world and all parts of our nation, we are helping to bring about greater understanding among people of differing cultures and values.
Now, with sponsor Callaway, the Junior World continues to bring together golfers from throughout the world to San Diego.

Redford, my son and the SDJGA 2013 Player of the Year, made the cut on Friday for the 115th Annual SCGA Amateur Championship at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club.

He shot two rounds of 74 for 4 over par and tied for 22nd place. He will tee off on Saturday morning at 8:09am. You can follow the live leaderboard and track Redford’s progress throughout the rest of the event.

I am carrying the bag for him for this tournament and I couldn’t be prouder of his progress from last year. Playing NCAA Division 1 golf for a year at UNLV has given him more consistency, confidence and maturity. As a golf instructor, I can see the consistency in his game. As a dad, I see the maturity of my son in the last 12 months.
Instructing Junior Golfers is one of the best aspects of my job. Seeing my son hone his game at the collegiate level gives me so much pride because I know that I have instilled a great foundation that his golf coaches at UNLV are taking to the next level.
Wish us luck as we tackle the next two days and we hope to climb the leaderboard against some of the best competition in Southern California!

A quick update on my son, Redford — the reigning San Diego County Junior Golf Player of the Year.
Redford will be starting his sophomore year at UNLV this fall, but he has qualified for two very important tournaments this summer.
The first one is the 103rd Annual California Amateur Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa from June 16th – 21st. George Von Elm, Ken Venturi, Gene Littler, Johnny Miller and Mark O’Meara are just a few of the previous winners of this tournament.

Although this tournament is over 100 years old, this is only the second time that it has been held in San Diego County. All contestants will play 36 holes of stroke play – 18 holes on each of their newly redesigned courses, the Champions Course and the Legends Course. The low 32 players will then advance to match play on the Champions Course.
The second tournament Redford qualified for is the 115th SCGA Amateur Championships at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club from July 11th – 13th. This championship is open to amateurs who are members of a current SCGA member club with a handicap index of 5.4 or less at the time of registration.

The tournament format is as follows:
Friday, July 11th: Rounds 1 and 2 (36 holes stroke play). 84 players will play two rounds. Following the second round, the field will be cut to the low 42 scores (plus ties).
Saturday, July 12th: Round 3 (18 holes stroke play)
Saturday, July 13th: Round 4 (18 holes stroke play)
Mentoring and teaching Juniors is one of my passions. I have a proven track record of taking Juniors to the next level. This summer, I am offering Junior Camps in June and in August. Please consider enrolling your Junior Golfers in one of these camps
See you on the course!

I’ve had great success in mentoring and instructing Junior Golfers during my teaching career. It is one of the most enriching experiences seeing young golfers find an appreciation for the game and give them life lessons they can take off the course.
It is a well known fact that individuals who receive quality instruction in a sport at a young age have a significant advantage in perfecting their skills. My sport, Golf, teaches life skills of honesty, integrity, self-control, character, and discipline – all valuable traits to be cultivated in young individuals. My thirty years of playing professional golf and teaching the game has equipped me to develop golf skills not only in young people, but also in individuals of all ages.

This summer, I will hold two Junior Camps — the first one runs from June 23rd through June 27th; the second one will be from August 4th through August 7th. The sessions are from Monday through Friday and starts at 9:30am to noon. All sessions will be at Sorrento Canyon Golf Center (5605 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121). Each of the week-long sessions are $300 per student.
These sessions cover all aspects of the game at every level: Putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers, full swings with video analysis and are open to Junior Golfers ages 5-17.
Assisting with these camps will be Redford Bobbitt, SDJGA 2013 Player of the Year and currently playing NCAA Division I golf for UNLV

Camps includes: PGA Instruction, Balls, Clubs, Video Analysis, Use of 18 hole Putting Course. This is a great opportunity for your kids to get mentored by a PGA Golf Pro and a former SDJGA Player of the Year.
If you would like to book a camp session for your Junior Golfer, please click HERE. You can also email me at brian@brianbobbitt.com or call 858-232-5516 with any questions.

My son Redford qualified for “The Goodwin” tournament hosted by the Stanford Cardinal at Stanford Golf Course in the Bay Area. The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels flew there in style on this private jet.

The 18-team field is comprised of host Stanford, UAB, Northwestern, Colorado State, San Jose State, Fresno State, Washington, TCU, Oregon, UC Davis, USC, St. Mary’s, UCLA, USF, Washington State, San Diego State, UNLV and Loyola Marymount.
The Tournament will span three days (March 28-30th) and features 54 holes of stroke play. Groups begin from holes 1 and 10. All players will be re-grouped before each round based on scores. For the purposes of tournament honors and awards, ties will be split per NCAA Championship tie-breaking procedures.

In what is possibly the best field in Collegiate Golf — with seven of the top ten schools and all of the top five playing this weekend, The Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters is one of the highlights of the Division 1 Golf season.
My son, and 2013 San Diego County Juniors Player of the Year, Redford Bobbitt is golfing for UNLV in the tournament. The Runnin’ Rebels, enter the tournament ranked 33rd in the nation.
The favorites are the Alabama Crimson Tide, ranked #1 and led by #1 Player in the Country Trey Mullinax. Returning SHC Champions Cal Bears are also in the field and ranked #4 in the country.

It is a tough field, and Redford, as a Freshman is honored just to be in such illustrious company. We’re here in Las Vegas supporting him this weekend! Wish us luck.
You can follow the tournament at Golfstat.com and UNLVRebels.com.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with 18 holes starting at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the tournament is available on the internet courtesy of Golfstat through a link at UNLVRebels.com.

This isn’t golf related, but when something this exciting happens in your family, you cannot help but scream it out for all to hear.
This was a huge weekend for my brother, Oscar-nominated cinematographer for 12 Years a Slave, Sean Bobbitt.

On Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards, 12 Years A Slave took home a boatload of awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Sean took home the best cinematography award for his work on the film! Here is a full list of award winners.
Sunday, at the Oscars, Sean was once again nominated for best cinematography. Unfortunately, he didn’t get that award, but just being part of the Best Picture team is reward enough. He got shout-outs from Lupita Nyong’o in her acceptance speech and from director Steve McQueen during his speech during the Best Picture acceptance.
This is life changing for my brother, and my family and I couldn’t be more proud of this major accomplishment.
We love you Sean, and we cannot wait to see what you are going to do next!

I am proud to announce that I am one of the first sports instructors on TakeLessons.com, and the FIRST GOLF INSTRUCTOR!
I was approached last week to gauge my interest in being among their first sports instructors on this very popular website. After speaking with them, I thought it was a great way to reach more students, especially in the Junior Golf lessons — since Take Lessons has about 80% under 18 students using their site.
This year, I am focusing on Junior Golfers during their Spring Break and Summer Holidays. As you may know, I have a proven track record in sending Juniors off to the Callaway Junior Worlds — averaging ten players a year. Also, as the life long instructor for my son, Redford, I see how mentoring kids on not only golf, but also nutrition and proper exercise has an impact on their entire game. I am proud to say that Redford was not only the 2013 San Diego County Junior Golf Associations Player of the Year, but he is also continuing his golf at UNLV.
If you are interested in golf lessons for your kids, or have friends or family who may be interested, please send them my way.
